EPES short course information

The EPES group has had a tradition of strong interaction with the electric utility industry. EPES is involved in a variety of short courses offered via ISU Extension to Business and Industry.

Several short courses are offered annually to serve timely needs of the electric utility industry. Typical subjects for 3 to 5 day courses are:

  • Protective Relaying
  • Power System Protection
  • Electric Substation Design and Maintenance
  • Distribution and Transmission Line Design
  • Distribution Engineering
  • Engineering Economics, and
  • Power System Operations

Presenters come from utilities, manufacturers, consulting organizations, and Iowa State University. Attendees work for investor owned utilities, municipals, rural electric cooperatives, and public power districts.


Wind Generation Technology Short Course

A Wind Generation Technology short course is scheduled for October 20–23, 2009, sponsored by ECpE Extension at ISU. The course will cover several topics related to wind turbine technology, wind farm design, and system integration. For more details, download the course brochure.


Power System Operators Short Course

Current, a new internet-based self-study program for Power System Operators (PSOs), is now available to assist PSOs in obtaining the Continuing Education Hours required by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to maintain certification. This program was developed jointly by The Energy Group of America, and by Engineering Distance Education and the EPES short course program at Iowa State University. Details are provided here.
